George Enescu — 145 Years Since His Birth

19/08/2026

Today, one hundred and forty-five years after the birth of George Enescu, it is difficult to write of him without feeling a deep and quiet sense of pride. Pride that this man, admired throughout the great world of European music, was born here, in a Moldavian village, and remained bound to Romania throughout his life with a fidelity that distance only deepened.

Leaving for Vienna while still very young, and later for Paris, the child from Moldavia would become one of the great musicians of his time. Yet something profoundly Romanian remained within this thoroughly European man. We hear it in his music, in the memory of his Moldavian childhood, in the first sounds of a violin, in distance and return, and in that Romanian “dor” which no translation ever quite contains.

Today, we, the members of The Knights of Malta Club, remember him with affection and with the respect owed to one of the greatest figures Romania has given to world culture.

With love, admiration and gratitude, in memory of George Enescu!
